Terra inlet VANOS issue
Summary of the thread
A 2021 Nissan Terra with high mileage exhibited a check engine light and increased fuel consumption, potentially linked to a faulty inlet VANOS. Possible causes include issues with the camshaft solenoid valves or power supply. A similar past experience with a BMW suggested that a faulty VANOS solenoid could disrupt variable timing, leading to these symptoms. The problem was confirmed by a mechanic, who identified the inlet VANOS as faulty and provided a repair quote.

Yeah, there is some serious oil sludge! And I did notice a bit of low power, but nothing crazy. What was the cause with your BMW? Was it a variable timing issue?

Yep, turned out to be a faulty VANOS solenoid. The variable timing wasn't working correctly, messing with the inlet camshaft timing. If you're seeing oil sludge I would suggest a visit to a mechanic, this is not a small fault.

Thanks for the advice! Dropped the Terra off at my usual workshop, and they confirmed that the inlet VANOS was indeed faulty. Quoted me around 250€ for the repair. Appreciate your help!

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my old BMW 3 Series few years ago. Same symptoms, check engine light and increased fuel consumption. Did you notice any drop in power, especially at lower RPMs? Maybe some oil sludge?
