Terra rough running exhaust smell
Summary of the thread
A 2019 Nissan Terra is experiencing rough engine running, a strong exhaust smell, and an illuminated check engine light. The potential causes include issues with the catalytic converter, DEF fluid, EGR valve, NOx sensors, or a defective lambda sensor, with the latter being a primary suspect. The presence of soot near the exhaust suggests a problem within the exhaust system, and it is advised to have the vehicle inspected by a workshop to prevent further damage.

Yes, I've noticed a considerable amount of soot accumulating near the exhaust pipe. Could you elaborate on the specific sensor that failed in your Volvo, and whether it was directly related to the catalytic converter or any other exhaust treatment components?

I can't remember exactly which one it was, but the garage diagnosed it pretty quickly. Given the soot, it's almost certainly something in the exhaust system. I'd get it checked out by a workshop, you might make the problem worse if you drive it and something is blocked.

I will schedule an appointment with a reputable workshop to diagnose and rectify the issue. The estimated repair cost is around 375€. Hopefully, it's a straightforward sensor replacement. Thanks!

Hey, I had similar symptoms on my old Volvo V70: check engine light, rough running, and a weird smell. Turned out to be a bad sensor in the exhaust system. Is the exhaust particularly sooty?
