Tipo Camshaft Sensor Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Fiat Tipo with a diesel engine is experiencing starting difficulties, stalling at idle, and an illuminated check engine light, suspected to be due to a defective camshaft sensor. The encoder wheel on the camshafts could also be a potential cause of the issue. Testing the sensor is possible but seeking professional assistance is recommended to avoid further damage. Diagnostics confirmed the camshaft sensor defect, aligning with similar past experiences, and repair costs are estimated around 695€.

Is sensor testing something I can easily do myself, or am I better off seeking professional assistance? Also, were your symptoms exactly the same as mine, and what mileage were you at?

While you could test the sensor yourself with the right tools, I'd honestly suggest taking it to a workshop if you're not completely comfortable. My symptoms were almost identical around 90000 km. It turned out to be exactly what you're suspecting: camshaft sensor at fault. It cost me around 700€. It's less hassle in the long run to get it diagnosed properly. Is it worth risking further damage?

Thank you for confirming. I appreciate the advice. I've booked it in for diagnostics and repair. It seems the camshaft sensor was indeed defective – encoder wheel issue. I was quoted 695€ which is in line with your experience.

Sounds familiar! I also drive a Tipo diesel. I had similar issues a while back – poor starting, occasional stalling, and that dreaded engine light. Have you had the sensor tested? It could also be related to ignition timing. Have you checked that?
