Tipo mass air flow sensor issue

Hey, I've got a 2021 Fiat Tipo with a gasoline engine that's giving me headaches. I'm at 88917 km and I suspect the mass air flow meter (LMM) is on its way out. I'm seeing higher fuel consumption, the engine sometimes stalls at idle, the check engine light is on, and there's some smoke when I accelerate. Sounds like a defective mass air flow sensor, right? Anyone else run into this?

Summary of the thread

A 2021 Fiat Tipo with a gasoline engine is experiencing higher fuel consumption, engine stalling at idle, a persistent check engine light, and smoke during acceleration, leading to the suspicion of a defective mass air flow sensor. The problem persisted despite replacing a slightly dirty air filter. Replacing the mass air flow sensor resolved the issues, confirming the initial suspicion.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms with my Tipo. Is your check engine light constantly on, or does it come and go? Have you checked your air filter recently? A dirty filter can sometimes cause issues with the MAF sensor, although it's unlikely to cause all the symptoms you're describing.

The check engine light is pretty much always on now. I did check the air filter, and it was a bit dirty, but nothing crazy. I replaced it anyway, but the problems are still there. Did replacing the MAF sensor fix it for you completely?

Yeah, replacing the MAF sorted it out for me. Given that you've changed the air filter and the light's still on, it's highly probable that the sensor is faulty. I would advise you to get it checked out by a workshop. They can confirm the diagnosis with the proper equipment. Don't drive too much, or you will damage the catalytic converter.

Thanks for the insight! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on – the mass air flow sensor was defective. The repair, including the new sensor and labor, cost me 365€. Runs like new now!
