Toyota Auris Diesel 2010: Power loss, engine control light, exhaust odor and DPF regeneration problems

Hi folks, my Toyota Auris Diesel from 2010 is experiencing strange problems. The car is losing power, the check engine light is on, there is a strong smell of exhaust fumes and black smoke is coming out of the exhaust when accelerating. In addition, the DPF regeneration no longer seems to work. I suspect it could be due to the diesel particulate filter being heavily loaded. Have any of you had similar experiences and can give me some troubleshooting tips? How did you get the problem fixed at your garage? Thank you for your help!

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Toyota Auris Diesel is experiencing power loss, a check engine light, exhaust odor, and DPF regeneration issues. The suspected cause is a heavily loaded diesel particulate filter (DPF). Suggested solutions include driving at high speeds on the highway to clean the filter and using a diesel additive. If these methods fail, a costly repair may be necessary.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, I have had similar problems with my 2008 Toyota Avensis, a different model of the same make. I would describe my experience with cars as minimal, so I'm not the expert here. When I noticed such problems, I took it straight to my garage. They found that the DPF (diesel particulate filter) was internally defective, which was causing the problem. The repair cost me around 1550€. In your case, it's difficult to give specific advice without knowing more detailed information about the car. When was the last time you changed the oil? How often do you drive in city traffic (short distances)? Such information could help me to give some more suggestions. Good luck with that!

Hi, thanks for your feedback. That's not exactly what I wanted to hear, but it's good to know. My mileage is 118816 KM and my last service was around 10000 KM ago. I drive a lot in the city, but also long distances on the highway. I am now trying to get the problem under control with cheaper methods. If that doesn't work, I'll probably have to bite the bullet and accept an expensive repair. Have a nice day!

Hi, I totally understand that this was not the message you wanted. With this number of kilometers, it is quite possible that the particulate filter has reached the end of its service life. The mixture of city and highway driving is not easy for the DPF to handle. Nevertheless, before you take on an expensive repair, you could try driving a longer stretch of highway at high speed. This can sometimes help to clean the filter a little. Using an additive that is added to the diesel can also sometimes help. Trying these methods doesn't cost too much and could possibly solve the problem. Hopefully this helps a little and the problems go away soon! All the best with it!

Hi, thanks again for the additional suggestions! I will definitely try to tackle the problem the cheaper way first before considering an expensive repair. In the longer term, I will consider whether diesel is really the best option for my driving style. Thanks again for your help and patient explanations. All the best and have a great day!
