Toyota Matrix engine stalls after fuel filter change

I own a 2008 Toyota Matrix with a gasoline engine. Recently, the check engine light came on, and the engine occasionally stalls when idling. I've also noticed a reduction in engine power. These issues started after I changed the fuel filter. Could a defective fuel pressure regulator be the issue? The car has 171127 km on it.

Summary of the thread

After changing the fuel filter on a 2008 Toyota Matrix, the engine began stalling, the check engine light came on, and there was a reduction in engine power. These issues were suspected to be caused by a defective fuel pressure regulator, possibly due to an error during the filter replacement. A professional diagnosis confirmed the faulty regulator, and the issue was resolved with a repair.

That sounds plausible. A faulty fuel pressure regulator could definitely cause those symptoms, especially with the engine misfire and rough idle. Since the issues started right after the filter change, it is possible something went wrong during the replacement, maybe leading to an error entry in your ECU. Have you checked the fuel pump?

I haven't checked the fuel pump specifically. What should I be looking for regarding the fuel pump's state?

You'd want to test the fuel pump's output pressure and make sure it's within the proper range. A drop in pressure could indicate a failing pump, or the regulator not doing its job. However, considering everything started after the filter change, and with those symptoms including reduced engine power, it really points to the regulator or related sensor. Best go to a workshop for professional diagnosis.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I took it to a mechanic, and it turned out to be a defective fuel pressure regulator, likely caused by an error entry after changing the fuel filter, just like you suspected. The repair cost was 45€. Problem solved.
