TPMS ABS and Steering Issues

I'm having a recurring problem with my 2007 Ford Maverick with a gasoline engine, which has 161642 kilometers. The TPMS warning light illuminates intermittently, and the ABS lamp lights up sporadically. I've also noticed steering wheel vibration and increased steering effort, possibly indicating a power steering malfunction. I've checked the tire pressures manually, and they seem okay. Could a faulty sensor be triggering these alerts?

I had similar issues with my Maverick, though I didn't check the tire pressure manually. The tire pressure monitoring system on these cars is somewhat over-engineered. If one string is out of tune, the whole orchestra sounds bad. Are you certain that all your tires are inflated to precisely the same pressure? Even a slight discrepancy can trigger the system. Also, have you considered that the sensors themselves might be the culprits? They are battery-powered and, after this many years, might be sending inaccurate signals due to low power. Did you check the spare too?

Thank you. I did not check the spare tire, and I will do so immediately. Regarding the tire pressures, while I ensured they were within the recommended range, I did not meticulously verify that they were identical across all four tires. Could such minor variations truly precipitate such a cascade of seemingly unrelated symptoms, including the ABS and power steering anomalies?

In my experience, yes, it can, especially that ABS light. The system is surprisingly sensitive. However, given the age of your Maverick and the additional symptoms you described, specifically, the steering issues and ABS light, it might be prudent to have the system diagnosed professionally. While the tire pressure, or rather, the valve in the tire, may indeed be the primary trigger, there could be underlying issues exacerbating the problem. From my recollection, it turned out to be the valve in one of my tires. It was defective!

I appreciate your insights. Based on your experience and recommendations, I will schedule an appointment with a qualified mechanic to conduct a thorough diagnostic assessment of the tire pressure monitoring system and associated components. It appears that a defective tire valve was indeed the source of the problem. The total cost for diagnosis and repair, including replacement of the faulty valve and recalibration of the TPMS, amounted to 280€. Thank you again.
