Trafic EGR Valve Issue

My 2000 Renault Trafic diesel is giving me a headache. 224383 km on the clock. The check engine light is on, and the engine feels like it's lost power. When I accelerate, it smokes, runs rough, and guzzles fuel. Plus, it's started jerking and making a loud hissing noise. Could it be the EGR valve? I checked for vacuum leaks, but couldn't find anything. Anyone else experienced this?

Sounds very familiar! I had similar symptoms with my Trafic: check engine light, power loss, and black smoke. I'd put my money on the EGR valve. Did you look at the EGR itself?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't pulled the EGR valve out yet, I was hoping to get confirmation before dismantling everything. Was it exactly the same? The jerking and hissing noises are really worrying me!

Yep, pretty much identical - jerking, hissing, the whole shebang. It sounds like the EGR valve is jammed open or defective. It could be worth cleaning it, but in my case, it needed replacing. Get it checked at a workshop. You will probably have to replace it to get your car back to normal.

Thanks a lot for your help! I think I’ll take it to a workshop. Had a quote for around 355€, so hopefully that sorts it.
