Trafic Engine Stalling After Refueling

Hi, I'm having a weird issue with my 2014 Renault Trafic, gasoline engine. The check engine light keeps popping on, and sometimes the engine just stalls when I'm idling. I've noticed it mostly happens after I fill up the fuel tank. Could it be some kind of fuel tank ventilation problem? I already checked the fuel cap.

Summary of the thread

The issue with the 2014 Renault Trafic involves the engine stalling and the check engine light activating, primarily after refueling. The problem is likely linked to the fuel tank ventilation system, specifically a leak in the evaporative emission control system. The activated charcoal filter, responsible for capturing gasoline fumes, was identified as the faulty component. Replacing the filter resolved the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

That sounds suspiciously like a fuel tank ventilation system leak. I had a similar problem with my old 2012 Opel Astra. The check engine light would come on intermittently, and the engine would run rough at idle. Did you check the error codes? Is there anything related to emission control?

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, I checked the error codes with a cheap OBD2 scanner, and it gave me something about "Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected." Does this confirm it or could there be other reasons?

Yep, the error code and the symptoms are pretty conclusive. On my Astra it was a defective activated charcoal filter in the fuel tank ventilation system, which is responsible for capturing the gasoline fumes. Get it checked at a workshop, they can measure the pressure in the fuel tank. If the activated charcoal filter is broken, it can cause the described problems.

Thanks a lot! Based on your advice, I brought it to the workshop and you were spot on! It was indeed the activated charcoal filter. Repair cost me 275€, but at least the problem is solved!
