Trafic gearbox slipping
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Renault Trafic with a gasoline engine is experiencing gearbox slipping and unclean gear shifts, suspected to be due to issues with the transfer case, possibly from oil wear or a leak. A suggestion was made to check for gear grinding sounds and inspect the transfer case oil for metal shavings, which could indicate defective gears. Upon inspection, defective gears were confirmed, leading to a repair cost of 330€.

Thanks! I'll check for grinding and metal shavings. If those are present, what's the most likely fix? Rebuild or something simpler?

If you find shavings, the gears are probably wearing down. A rebuild might be needed, or even a replacement of the transfer case. Get a proper diagnosis to avoid more damage.

I had similar symptoms with my Trafic. Check for gear grinding sounds and inspect the transfer case oil for metal shavings. That could mean defective gears inside.
