Trafic Ignition Problems

My petrol-powered 2003 Renault Trafic is giving me absolute hell. 120408 km on the clock. The ignition is completely borked. Sometimes it won't start at all, other times it conks out mid-drive, and when it does run, it's rough as guts. I've checked the usual suspects – battery's fine, starter motor seems healthy. I even had a look for an ignition fuse, but couldn't find one! Am I missing something obvious before I start tearing into the ignition coil pack?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Renault Trafic with ignition problems was experiencing issues such as failing to start, stalling mid-drive, and rough operation. Initial checks on the battery and starter motor showed no issues, and the user was considering inspecting the ignition coil pack. A suggestion to try a spare key was made, but it didn't resolve the problem. Ultimately, a visit to a workshop revealed a faulty crankshaft position sensor, which was replaced, resolving the issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds like a similar headache I had with my Trafic. Was getting random engine shutdowns. Did you check the ignition key itself? I know it sounds daft, but...

The key? You reckon it's the transponder or something? I've got a spare, I'll give it a whirl, but can a dodgy key really cause all those symptoms? Engine randomly cutting out seems a bit extreme for just a key issue.

Yeah, figured it was a long shot, but worth a try. If the spare doesn't fix it, I'd bite the bullet and get it to a workshop. They'll have the gear to diagnose the car electronics properly. Turned out some sensor went bad on mine, and it was cheaper for them to find it than for me to keep guessing.

The spare key didn't do the trick, so I took your advice and went to a shop. Turns out it was a faulty crankshaft position sensor causing all the grief. 52€ later and it's running sweet as a nut! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
