Trajet torque converter issue

I've got a 2000 Hyundai Trajet, gasoline engine, with 133309 km on the clock. Recently, the check engine light and the transmission indicator light have both come on. The gearbox feels like it's slipping, and the shifts aren't clean at all. Sometimes, I even hear grinding noises when it shifts. I hooked it up to a scanner, and it's throwing an error related to the torque converter lock-up clutch. Anyone else experienced something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2000 Hyundai Trajet with 133,309 km exhibited issues with the check engine and transmission indicator lights, along with slipping and grinding noises during gear shifts. A diagnostic scan revealed an error related to the torque converter lock-up clutch, suggesting a defective automatic transmission converter. The recommended solution was to have the vehicle inspected by a reputable workshop to prevent further transmission damage, which confirmed the converter issue and led to its repair.

I have a Hyundai Trajet too, and while the specifics are different, what you're describing sounds vaguely familiar. I had a similar issue a while back, also auto transmission, albeit not exactly the same symptoms. Was the error code specifically pointing to the torque converter, or was it more generic transmission trouble?

The error code was pretty specific, mentioning the torque converter lock-up clutch. I'm starting to think it might be a defective automatic transmission converter. What kind of error code did you get and how similar was your issue? I am just trying to get an idea of what I'm up against here.

Ah, torque converter lock-up clutch specific, that clarifies things. Mine was less precise, but led down a similar path. Given the grinding and slipping, and the error code pointing directly at the torque converter, it's highly suggestive of a converter issue. Honestly, with those symptoms, I'd strongly advise taking it to a reputable workshop for a thorough diagnostic. Continuing to drive it in that condition could lead to further damage to the transmission.

Thanks for the insight. I appreciate the advice. I took it to the workshop, and you were right – the automatic transmission converter was defective, just like the error code said. The repair cost me 2120€, but at least it's sorted now.
