Trax Engine Power Loss

Hey, I'm having trouble with my 2016 Chevrolet Trax with a gasoline engine. It's got about 68k kilometers on it. Lately, I've noticed a real drop in engine power, and the check engine light keeps popping up. The engine runs really rough, and it's jerking pretty badly when I try to accelerate. Sometimes it even stalls when I'm idling. I'm thinking it might be a mixture preparation error, but I'm not sure where to start looking. Anyone else experience something similar? I've checked the air filter and it seems clean. I also tried cleaning the throttle body, but that didn't seem to help much.

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Chevrolet Trax with 68,000 kilometers is experiencing engine power loss, rough running, and stalling, with the check engine light on. The initial suspicion is a mixture preparation error. Possible causes include clogged or malfunctioning fuel injectors, a defective oxygen sensor, or issues with the mass airflow sensor. The suggested solution is to inspect and test the fuel injectors and oxygen sensor, with a recommendation to consult a mechanic for accurate diagnosis and repair. Ultimately, the problem was identified as a defective fuel injector, which was replaced, resolving the issue.

Sounds familiar. I have a Chevrolet Trax too, though I'm not sure of the exact year right now, and I had similar symptoms a while back. Reduced power, rough running, and the check engine light were the big ones. Have you checked your fuel injectors? If one or more are clogged or malfunctioning, it can definitely mess with your air-fuel ratio and cause those problems. A defective injector will cause a rich mixture. It might be worth getting them tested. You can also try checking the oxygen sensor. Also, did you check the mass airflow sensor?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the fuel injectors specifically. How would I go about testing them? And where is the oxygen sensor located? I'm not very familiar with that part of the engine. I know what it is, but I don't know where to find it in the car.

Testing the injectors properly usually requires some specialized equipment. You can try a visual inspection for any obvious damage or leaks, but a proper flow test is best. Regarding the O2 sensor, it's located in the exhaust system, usually before and after the catalytic converter. Given your symptoms and the mileage, and that you already checked the throttle body, I'd lean towards a defective injector. Honestly, it might be worth taking it to a trusted mechanic for a diagnosis. It will save you time and potential headaches in the long run.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to my local shop, and it turned out to be a defective fuel injector, just like you suspected. The repair cost me around 515€, but the car is running great again. Really appreciate your help!
