Okay, so it was the O2 sensor, same as you. Honestly, I messed around with trying to clean the contacts, checking the wires... total waste of time. Should have just taken it to a shop sooner. I was convinced I could fix it myself, but in the end, it needed proper testing. Save yourself the headache and find a good technician. That's my advice.

Oh man, sounds familiar! I had almost the EXACT same thing happen with my old Opel Astra. Check engine light, gas mileage tanking... turned out to be some stupid sensor. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. Was it throwing any specific codes?
