Ulysee Automatic Transmission Fault

I'm having a weird issue with my 2002 Fiat Ulysee diesel. It's got about 134,000 km on the clock. Basically, the parking position on the automatic transmission seems to be defective. The engine won't start, the check engine light is on, and the gearbox sometimes slips or shifts roughly. I plugged in an OBD reader, and there's definitely an error code stored. Anyone experienced anything similar? Could it be a dodgy transmission sensor or something? It's a pain because it's stuck in park!

Summary of the thread

The 2002 Fiat Ulysee diesel is experiencing issues with the automatic transmission, specifically with the parking position, preventing the engine from starting and causing rough shifting. An error code from an OBD reader suggests a potential fault in the transmission control module. The problem may involve a defective transmission sensor or control unit, leading to erratic solenoid valve operation. A diagnostic evaluation by a qualified workshop is recommended to confirm the issue and determine the necessary repairs.

The symptoms you describe suggest a problem within the automatic transmission's control system. I encountered a comparable situation with a 2014 Opel Insignia. The issue was a faulty transmission control unit which prevented the engine from starting due to the inability to confirm the selector lever position. Does the error code you retrieved reference the transmission control module?

The error code does seem to point towards the transmission control module. I've read that these units can sometimes be the culprit. Was the repair on your Opel Insignia expensive? And did you experience the same slipping issue before it completely failed?

The repair was substantial, approximately 1000€. The slipping you describe is consistent with the early stages of control unit failure, as it can cause erratic solenoid valve operation within the transmission. Given the stored error code and symptoms, I would advise a diagnostic evaluation by a qualified workshop to confirm the control unit's integrity.

That's really helpful! I'll take it to a workshop. I suspected it might be something along those lines, and your experience confirms my fears. I'll let you know what they find.
