Ulysee NOx Catalyst Aging Exhaust Leak
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Fiat Ulysee with 190,390 km is experiencing a check engine light due to a NOx storage catalyst aging error, alongside a noticeable exhaust leak. The exhaust leak, likely near the front of the car, could be affecting the oxygen sensor readings, leading to incorrect air/fuel mixtures and premature catalyst aging. Repairing the exhaust leak, such as welding a crack, can resolve the issue and turn off the check engine light.

Thanks for the quick response! I'm not entirely sure where the exhaust leak is coming from, but it does seem to be louder towards the front of the car. Could a small leak really cause the NOx catalyst to age prematurely?

Yes, even a small leak can cause issues with your emissions system. The leak will change the air/fuel mixture and can damage the catalyst over time. I would recommend taking it to a workshop and having them check the exhaust system for leaks. It cost me 265€ to have the crack welded.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on – a small crack in the exhaust was causing all the problems. They welded it up, and the check engine light is now off. Hopefully, no more NOx errors! Thanks again!

I had a similar issue with my Opel Insignia. Check engine light, emissions system errors... turned out to be a small crack in the exhaust manifold. It was throwing off the readings from the oxygen sensors and causing all sorts of problems with the catalytic converter efficiency. Is the exhaust leak you're hearing coming from somewhere near the front of the engine?
