Urbancruiser Hissing Sound Poor Economy

I'm having a weird issue with my 2021 Toyota UrbanCruiser (gasoline engine). It's done 123146 km and recently the fuel economy has tanked. Plus, the check engine light keeps popping up. I also hear a pretty loud hissing sound when I accelerate, almost like air escaping. I've checked the air filter and MAF sensor, but no luck. Could it be a vacuum leak somewhere? I'm thinking maybe the intake hose? Any ideas?

I experienced similar symptoms with my 2018 Volvo XC60. Higher fuel consumption and a hissing sound upon acceleration were present. Have you inspected the intake hose for any visible cracks or loose connections? A leak in the air intake system can certainly cause those issues.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely give the intake hose a closer look. When you had this issue with your Volvo, did you also experience any engine misfires or rough idling? And how difficult was it to pinpoint the exact location of the leak?

In my case, there was no engine misfire or rough idling, but each vehicle behaves differently. The precise location was difficult to determine without proper diagnostic tools. I suggest a visit to a qualified workshop, which will allow the leak to be professionally detected with a smoke test.

You were spot on! Took it to the shop, and it turned out to be a cracked intake hose. Replaced it for around 100€ and now the hissing is gone, the check engine light is off, and the fuel economy is back to normal. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
