Urgent: Z4 Transmission Grinding and Shifting Erratically

Help needed: Z4 transmission acting up badly! My 2016 BMW Z4 (44,810 KM, gas engine) is giving me transmission nightmares. Can't shift properly, weird grinding sounds, and the shifter display is acting up. The automatic transmission feels like it has a mind of its own with unusual shifts and slipping. Got error codes too. Had a terrible experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar transmission issues? Any suggestions on what this could be or how to handle it? Really appreciate any input on this!

I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW M240i last month. The transmission was acting erratic with harsh shifts and grinding noises. The diagnostic showed the transmission control unit (TCU) was failing. This is actually a serious problem that needs immediate attention to prevent permanent damage to the transmission. When I took it to the garage, they found the TCU had corroded connections and needed replacement. The whole repair took about 3 days because they had to reprogram the new unit. They also flushed the transmission fluid since it was contaminated. Based on your symptoms, it sounds very similar to what I experienced. The unusual shifts and error codes are classic signs of a failing TCU. Don't wait too long to get it checked, I'd suggest finding a certified BMW specialist who can properly diagnose and fix it. These transmission issues don't fix themselves and usually get worse over time.

Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the whole repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues popping up? My Z4's my daily driver, so I really need this sorted properly.

Hey, just wanted to update you on my Z4 situation! Finally got the courage to take it to a certified BMW specialist, and am I glad I did! You were spot on, it was the TCU causing all the drama.
