Thanks for sharing your experience! That's exactly what I was worried about with the TCU. I'm going to look for a certified specialist right away. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the whole repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues popping up? My Z4's my daily driver, so I really need this sorted properly.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up on your questions. The repair ended up costing me 1000 € for the TCU replacement and related work. And I've got great news, everything has been running perfectly smooth since the fix! The gear shift indicator display issue that was driving me nuts is completely gone now, and the transmission is shifting like a dream. I know you were worried about finding a good mechanic, but getting it done by a certified specialist was definitely worth it. My car feels like new again, no more grinding sounds, no unusual shifts, nothing. It's such a relief, especially since these BMWs are fantastic cars when they're running right. Trust me, you're making the right call getting it checked out soon. Since you mentioned it's your daily driver, you'll be so much happier once it's sorted. The peace of mind alone is worth every penny. Let me know how it goes when you get it fixed!

Hey, just wanted to update you on my Z4 situation! Finally got the courage to take it to a certified BMW specialist, and am I glad I did! You were spot on, it was the TCU causing all the drama. Had to shell out quite a bit, but the repair was worth every penny. The mechanic I found was fantastic, totally different from my last experience. They did a thorough diagnostic, replaced the TCU, and even gave the transmission a good flush. The whole thing took about four days, but my car's running like a dream now! No more weird noises, no more unusual shifts, and the display's working perfectly. Thanks so much for pushing me to get it checked by a proper specialist. It's such a relief to drive without worrying about the transmission acting up. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it gave me the confidence to get this sorted properly. The Z4's back to being the awesome car it should be!

I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW M240i last month. The transmission was acting erratic with harsh shifts and grinding noises. The diagnostic showed the transmission control unit (TCU) was failing. This is actually a serious problem that needs immediate attention to prevent permanent damage to the transmission. When I took it to the garage, they found the TCU had corroded connections and needed replacement. The whole repair took about 3 days because they had to reprogram the new unit. They also flushed the transmission fluid since it was contaminated. Based on your symptoms, it sounds very similar to what I experienced. The unusual shifts and error codes are classic signs of a failing TCU. Don't wait too long to get it checked, I'd suggest finding a certified BMW specialist who can properly diagnose and fix it. These transmission issues don't fix themselves and usually get worse over time.
