My 2002 V Klasse with a Gasoline engine is acting up Is it a torque converter fault

Sounds rough I had similar engine surge issues with my old Saab 9-5. Turned out to be a torque converter fault as well. Check engine light, slipping gears, the whole nine yards. Was it like driving through molasses sometimes Any grinding when it shifts

Exactly like molasses And the grinding is awful especially when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd. So, what exactly is a torque converter anyway, and how does it fail like this I'm seeing error codes pointing to the lock-up clutch.

Think of the torque converter as a donut filled with transmission fluid connecting your engine to the auto transmission. It multiplies torque at low speeds. The lock-up clutch is supposed to make it more efficient at higher speeds. A converter fault is a bad sign, if the error memory stored something and you are experiencing such symptoms, it's more than likely a transmission repair. It's not always cheap, but continuing to drive it will definitely make it worse. Get it checked

Thanks for the explanation and the advice Took it to a workshop, you were right. They confirmed it’s a converter fault and the lock-up clutch is gone. Quoted me 2120€ for a transmission repair. Ouch, but better than destroying the whole transmission. Thanks again
