V40 Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor

Engine and transmission warning lights on my 2012 Volvo V40 diesel, with 154965 km. Gearbox occasionally enters emergency mode, shifts are rough, and sometimes I hear grinding. Local garage says transmission oil temperature sensor is faulty. Could this be related to low gearbox oil?

I have a similar V40. Rough shifting and warning lights sound familiar. My issue was also the transmission oil temperature sensor. Did the garage check the oil level? That was the root cause for me.

The garage didn't explicitly check the oil level, only the error code for the temperature sensor. Could low oil cause all these symptoms, even the grinding? Is the sensor very sensitive to oil level changes?

Yes, low oil can trigger all those symptoms. The sensor monitors oil temperature, and if the level is low, it'll register incorrect readings. Grinding may be from insufficient lubrication. Check the oil level ASAP, or see a transmission specialist.

The workshop confirmed the gearbox oil level was too low, which damaged the transmission oil temperature sensor. The repair cost me 365€.
