V40 transmission slipping grinding

My 2002 Volvo V40 diesel is acting up. The engine light is on, and I think it's transmission-related. Sometimes it feels like the gears are slipping, and there are these awful grinding noises. I’ve checked online, and it seems like it could be the transmission oil pressure sensor. Has anyone else had this issue?

I had a similar issue with my V40. Same symptoms: lights, slipping. Did you check your gearbox oil level? It's surprising how often that's the culprit. Think of it like a bicycle chain – if it's not oiled, it's going to make some nasty sounds and not work very well.

Thanks for the tip! Where exactly do I check the gearbox oil level on a V40? And what kind of oil should I use if it's low? Any advice is appreciated before I make things worse!

Checking the level can be tricky without the right tools. It's usually a dipstick near the transmission, but it might be a fill plug you need to remove. As for the oil type, check your owner’s manual or a parts shop. I ended up taking mine to a workshop because I didn't want to mess things up further. It turned out the oil was low, and the sensor was faulty because of it.

Thanks! I appreciate you sharing your experience. I took your advice and had it checked at a workshop. Turns out you were right - low oil and a faulty pressure sensor. The bill was 365€, but at least it's fixed now!
