V50 auto transmission park issue

My 2005 Volvo V50, gasoline engine, is stuck in what seems like park, but isn't really in park. The engine won't start, the check engine light is on, and the gearbox is slipping. It's throwing a transmission error. I suspect something is wrong with the auto transmission park position, maybe a defective control unit. Anyone seen anything like this before?

I've experienced something similar with my V50. Can you confirm if the shift lock is engaged even when the shifter is seemingly in 'Park'? Were there any unusual noises preceding these issues?

The shift lock is engaged, even though the shifter is in 'Park.' It feels like something is preventing it from fully engaging. And yes, there was a faint clicking sound coming from the gearbox area for a few weeks before this all started. Did yours do the same?

Yes, on both counts. Given your description, particularly the shift lock issue and clicking noise, it strongly suggests a problem within the transmission control unit. Considering the symptoms, I recommend visiting a repair shop. Continuing to operate the vehicle could make the issue worse.

Diagnosis confirmed: faulty transmission control unit, just as you suspected. Repair, including the part and labor, came out to exactly 1000€. Ouch, but at least it's fixed. Appreciate the help!
