V50 Belt Handover Problem

Hi, I've got a 2008 Volvo V50 diesel with about 76k km on the clock. Recently, the belt-handover has stopped working. I suspect it's a defective belt bringer/handover itself. Has anyone experienced this before? Any thoughts on what I should check before taking it to a mechanic?

Hey! I had a similar issue with my V50. Is it making any weird noises, like a squealing or chirping sound, especially when the engine is cold? Mine turned out to be the belt tensioner. Check the idler pulley too, maybe it's worn out and causing the tensioner to fail.

Thanks for the tip! No squealing or chirping, just noticed the belt-handover wasn't working as it should. How did you diagnose it as the tensioner specifically? Did you notice any visual signs of wear or damage?

Well, initially I thought it was just a worn belt. But then the belt started slipping. The mechanic pointed out that the tensioner wasn't keeping the belt tight enough. He said the spring inside the tensioner had probably weakened. Honestly, just get it checked out by a professional. It could save you from bigger problems down the road.

Appreciate the advice! Took it to the workshop, and you were spot on – it was the belt tensioner. Ended up costing me around 455€ to get it sorted, including a new timing belt and serpentine belt as they were already in there. Thanks again for the help!
