V50 diesel particulate filter issue
Summary of the thread
A 2009 Volvo V50 diesel is experiencing reduced engine power and excessive smoke during acceleration, potentially linked to a diesel particulate filter (DPF) issue. The engine light is on, and fuel efficiency has decreased, suggesting a DPF problem. Cleaning the DPF might offer a temporary fix, but replacement is likely necessary. A workshop diagnosis confirmed the DPF was defective, and replacing it resolved the issue, restoring the car's performance.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, the engine light is on. Fuel efficiency has taken a hit as well. I haven't cleaned the DPF - is that something I can do myself, or is filter replacement inevitable?

Okay, engine light and fuel drop definitely point to the DPF. Cleaning might help temporarily, but honestly, a filter replacement is probably what you need. Given the symptoms, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop for a proper diagnosis.

Much appreciated! I'll take your advice and get it checked out at a workshop. Turns out the DPF was indeed defective and required replacement. Cost me around 1550€, but the car runs like new again!

Hey, I had a similar issue with my V50. Was the engine light on? Check your fuel efficiency too. When was the last time you cleaned the DPF, and have you considered a filter replacement?
