V50 diesel particulate filter issue

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2009 Volvo V50 diesel (61160 km). The engine power seems significantly reduced, and I've noticed excessive smoke when accelerating. Could this be connected to a sensor fault? I'm quite worried it might be the diesel particulate filter...

Hey, I had a similar issue with my V50. Was the engine light on? Check your fuel efficiency too. When was the last time you cleaned the DPF, and have you considered a filter replacement?

Thanks for the reply! Yes, the engine light is on. Fuel efficiency has taken a hit as well. I haven't cleaned the DPF - is that something I can do myself, or is filter replacement inevitable?

Okay, engine light and fuel drop definitely point to the DPF. Cleaning might help temporarily, but honestly, a filter replacement is probably what you need. Given the symptoms, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop for a proper diagnosis.

Much appreciated! I'll take your advice and get it checked out at a workshop. Turns out the DPF was indeed defective and required replacement. Cost me around 1550€, but the car runs like new again!
