V50 Ignition Problems

Hi, I've got a 2004 Volvo V50 diesel with about 186k km on the clock. I'm having a weird problem with the ignition. Sometimes it just won't start, other times it shuts off while driving, and occasionally runs really rough. I've checked the battery, but that seems fine. Could it be a fuse issue?

Sounds like a dodgy ignition switch. The symptoms you're describing, like cutting out while driving, point towards it. When you turn the key, does the starter motor even engage? A defective fuse could cause this. Check the fuses related to the car electronics and starter motor. Also, have you noticed if it happens more often in wet weather, or after the car has been sitting for a while?

Thanks for the quick reply. The starter motor doesn't always engage when I turn the key. Which specific fuses should I be checking, and where are they located?

Okay, the fact that the starter motor isn't engaging sometimes is key. Find the fuse box diagram (usually in the owner's manual or online). Look for fuses related to 'engine control', 'starter motor', and 'ignition'. If those are all good, it is highly likely the ignition switch has failed internally. In that case, I'd recommend getting it checked at a workshop.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. Took it to a local shop, they confirmed it was a defective fuse and replaced it for 52€. Runs like new again!
