V50 NOx Sensor Failure
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Volvo V50 is experiencing a NOx sensor failure, indicated by the check engine light and an unusual smell of exhaust fumes. The problem could be related to a faulty NOx sensor cable or plug, which can disrupt the air-fuel ratio and cause exhaust issues. A suggested solution is to inspect the exhaust system for damage and consider replacing the sensor cable, as a similar case was resolved by doing so.

Interesting! I'll take a closer look at the exhaust system for damage. But, if it's the NOx sensor cable or plug, how could that cause the exhaust to leak?

In my case, it turned out to be a faulty NOx sensor cable. The fumes were because the sensor wasn't working properly, messing up the air-fuel ratio. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop; cost me around 95€ all in. They diagnosed it quickly.

Thanks! I appreciate the help. I'll book it into a garage and see what they say, but it's good to know someone else had a similar problem and it wasn't a bank-breaking fix. Turns out the cable was defective, as suspected! New cable, and the light is gone.

I had a similar issue with my V50. Check engine light and everything. Have you tried checking for any visible damage to the exhaust system itself? Any cracks or rust?
