V70 Electronic Parking Brake Failure

I've got a 2015 Volvo V70 diesel with about 244k km on the clock. The electronic parking brake has completely failed - it's just non-functional. I've scanned the car and there's an error code related to the parking brake motor. Also, there's a persistent warning light on the dash. From what I've read, it sounds like it might be the electric motor in one of the rear calipers, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Summary of the thread

The electronic parking brake on a 2015 Volvo V70 has completely failed, with an error code indicating an issue with the parking brake motor and a warning light on the dashboard. The problem is suspected to be the electric motor in one of the rear calipers, a common issue with such symptoms. Suggested solutions include manually actuating the release mechanism and verifying the error code to rule out a control module fault. Ultimately, a professional diagnostic confirmed the motor in the brake caliper as the culprit, leading to the ordering of new calipers for repair.

Ah, the dreaded electronic parking brake! I had a similar nightmare with my old Renault Laguna. Exact same symptoms: handbrake dead, error code popping up, and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. For me, it was indeed the motor in the caliper. Have you tried manually actuating the release mechanism? It might at least disengage the brake if it's stuck on. Also, are you absolutely certain about the error code? Sometimes the fault can lie with the control module itself, although the motor is the more common culprit, in my experience.

Thanks for the insights! I haven't tried manually releasing it yet, I'll give that a shot. As for the error code, I'll double-check it. Is there anything specific I should be looking for in the code description that would point more towards the module rather than the motor? Just trying to cover all bases before I start throwing parts at it.

Okay, so with my Laguna, the error code was pretty generic, something like 'Parking Brake System Malfunction'. A module fault often throws up more communication-related errors, like 'CAN bus error' or a specific code referring to the control module itself. But honestly, those motors are notoriously fragile. Given the mileage and symptoms, the motor remains the most likely culprit. Best advice I can give is get a proper diagnostic from a workshop; they'll be able to pinpoint it exactly. Because if it is the motor, you're looking at new calipers, which, in my experience, it probably is.

Thanks again for the info. Sounds like a trip to the shop is in order. I appreciate you sharing your experience – at least now I have a better idea of what to expect. It turns out my local shop did a full diagnostic for 505€, and the culprit was, in fact, the electric motor in the brake calliper. New callipers are ordered and hopefully this will be fixed soon.
