V70 Gear Shift Indicator Failure

My 2014 Volvo V70 gasoline has a dead gear shift indicator. The car doesn't know what gear it's in, making it impossible to engage gears sometimes. Other times the automatic transmission shifts horribly, slips, or feels unclean. There are grinding noises when it finally does shift, and the display for the gear selection in the speedometer is blank. Any ideas? I got an error stored, but I don’t have any tools to check it.

I own a V70 as well and experienced similar symptoms not long ago. The lack of gear indication, along with the rough shifting and stored error, certainly points towards a sensor problem or a defective control unit. Have you checked the shift knob area for any loose connections or damage? It might be worth a quick look before delving deeper.

Sensor problem sounds like a headache... Do you remember exactly what sensor was giving you trouble? Was the repair expensive?

I cannot pinpoint the exact sensor that caused my issue, but the symptoms were virtually identical. Given the potential for electronic components to be the root cause, I strongly recommend having a qualified mechanic diagnose your V70 using professional diagnostic equipment. Confirm for yourself that a defective control unit is indeed the diagnosis, as this is a common culprit. I ended up taking it to a Volvo workshop, and they verified a problem in a main control unit. I know that isn’t the answer you were looking for!

Appreciate the insights! I kinda figured it might be something like that. I'll bite the bullet and take it to the shop. I found on another forum that it will likely cost around 1000€, so I will get a second opinion!
