V90 Gearbox Slipping

I've got a 2016 Volvo V90, gasoline engine, pushing 178421 km. Experiencing some less-than-ideal gearbox behavior – shifts feel unclean, almost a slip at times. I suspect transfer case oil wear, given the symptoms. Anyone else encountered this? Preliminary checks point towards defective gears, but wanted to canvass opinions before tearing into it.

Interesting. Slipping and unclean shifts could point to a few things, but oil wear in the transfer case is certainly a possibility given the mileage. Has the transfer fluid ever been changed? When was the last time you changed your gear oil? It would be like running a marathon without ever replacing your shoes. What sort of oil wear are we talking about here, exactly?

Good point on the fluid change history. I'm not certain, it was not well documented, but I see your point. What symptoms could confirm defective gears instead of just worn fluid? Is there a simple diagnostic I can use?

While fluid changes are vital, the persistent slipping you describe, especially given the suspected wear, does indeed point more definitively towards internal gear issues. Consider it like this: changing the oil is like putting a bandage on a broken leg – it might help a little, but it won't fix the underlying problem. At this stage, a workshop visit for a professional diagnosis is advisable. They can properly assess the extent of the damage.

Appreciate the confirmation. Took it to the workshop; defective gears confirmed. Repair cost came to 330€, including parts and labor. Thanks for the advice – helped narrow down the issue and avoid chasing ghosts.
