Vanette rough running and exhaust smell
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Nissan Vanette with a gasoline engine is experiencing rough running, a strong exhaust smell, and an illuminated check engine light. The initial suspicion is a malfunction related to the particulate filter, NOx sensors, or lambda sensor. A similar case suggested checking the catalytic converter, but diagnostic codes confirmed the issue was with the lambda sensor. Replacing the defective lambda sensor resolved the problem.

Thanks for the tip! I haven't checked the catalytic converter specifically. What were the exact symptoms you experienced, and how did you narrow it down to the catalytic converter?

My Vanette had almost identical symptoms to yours, including the exhaust smell. Eventually, the diagnostic codes pointed to a problem with the exhaust treatment, and my mechanic confirmed it was the lambda sensor. I'd suggest getting the codes read to be sure, but it sounds like a trip to the workshop is in order.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Took it to the shop and you were right, the lambda sensor was defective. Ended up costing 375€ to get it sorted. Appreciate the help!

Hey, I had similar symptoms on my Vanette a while back. Engine light, rough running, the works. Did you check the catalytic converter? That can cause those problems too.
