Vauxhall Vectra oil pressure issue

Hi, I've got a 2004 Vauxhall Vectra diesel, with about 120,000 km on the clock. Recently, the oil pressure warning lamp has started lighting up intermittently, and I'm hearing some pretty nasty mechanical noises coming from the engine, especially when it's idling. I checked the oil level, and it's fine. Could this be a faulty oil pressure sensor, or is it something more serious?

Sounds worrying. I had similar symptoms in my Vectra. It could be a faulty oil pressure sensor, they're known to give trouble, but the mechanical noises are what concern me. Have you checked for any obvious oil leakage anywhere around the engine? Low oil pressure could be caused by a number of things, including a blocked oil filter, or even the wrong type of engine oil, but the noises are a real red flag.

Thanks for the reply. No visible oil leaks that I can see. I had an oil change about 6000 km ago, and the correct oil grade was used. What was the 'similar' issue you had? What was the outcome?

Mine turned out to be a defect in the oil pump itself. The pump wasn't providing enough pressure to properly lubricate the engine, hence the warning light and the noises, which were the sound of things not getting enough oil. Given your symptoms, I'd advise getting it checked by a workshop ASAP before something seizes up completely. If it is the oil pump, it's a fairly involved job to replace.

Thanks for the insight. I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on – it was the oil pump. The bill came to 755€, but at least it's sorted now.
