Velsatis Bypass Valve and Overheating
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Renault VelSatis diesel is experiencing a bypass valve malfunction and overheating at 113,482 kilometers. The initial concern is whether these issues could be linked to decreased fuel efficiency or engine stalling. After checking for obstructions in the air intake and exhaust, a suggestion is made to inspect the cooling system, particularly the thermostat, as a faulty thermostat can prevent proper coolant circulation, leading to overheating and triggering the bypass valve error. The problem is resolved by replacing the thermostat, which was covered by a service package.

Thanks for the quick reply. When you say 'usual suspects', could you elaborate on which specific components or systems I should be focusing on? I want to be thorough before consulting a technician.

In my case, the bypass valve error was a consequential error. The root cause, surprisingly, was a minor issue with the thermostat, preventing proper coolant circulation. This, in turn, caused the engine to run hotter, triggering the bypass valve error as a protective measure. Given your vehicle's age, it might be prudent to have the cooling system and related sensors thoroughly checked by a qualified workshop. It could save you from chasing the wrong issue.

I appreciate you explaining that the bypass valve error might be a symptom rather than the primary fault. Following your advice, I took my vehicle to a trusted workshop, and you were correct! It was indeed a faulty thermostat causing the overheating, which in turn triggered the bypass valve error. The repair involved replacing the thermostat, costing 0€, as it was covered by a service package. Thanks again for your guidance!

I also drive a VelSatis with a similar diesel engine, though a slightly newer model. I experienced comparable symptoms some time ago. I received the same error code related to the bypass valve, which initially seemed like the core issue. I did notice that the engine temperature was running higher than usual, and I was concerned about potential damage. Did you check the usual suspects?
