Verso engine knocking sound

I'm having a nasty issue with my 2017 Toyota Verso, gasoline engine. It's got about 74365 km on the clock. I've noticed a distinct knocking sound coming from the engine – sounds almost like pebbles rattling around inside. This is most noticeable under load. The car feels like it has lost quite a bit of power and it's jerking noticeably when accelerating. There's now some smoke coming out the exhaust when I put my foot down. I plugged in an OBD scanner and there's an error stored. I'm suspecting engine knock, maybe detonation due to bad fuel or something? Could it be deposits in the combustion chamber? I always use the recommended fuel octane, so I am at a loss.

Sounds familiar! I have a Verso too, though I can't recall the exact year. I had something similar happen a while back. Reduced power and a weird jerking thing. Have you checked your ignition timing? Detonation can really mess things up. Could be the fuel, or maybe you've got some carbon buildup in the combustion chamber.

Thanks for the quick reply! Ignition timing is something I hadn't considered. How did you eventually diagnose the problem with yours, and did you manage to fix it yourself? Any idea what might have caused it in the first place? Was it, in the end, combustion chamber deposits? The dealership is trying to sell me a new engine!

I didn't fiddle with the timing, honestly. I don't have the right tools for that. I took it to my local workshop, and they confirmed it was deposits in the combustion chamber causing pre-ignition, which is a form of engine knock. They sorted it out with some cleaning and an additive. Cost me about 425€, so it wasn't the end of the world. I would recommend you go to the workshop.

That's incredibly helpful, thank you! It's reassuring to hear that it wasn't a catastrophic engine failure. I'll take it to a trusted mechanic and suggest they look into the combustion chamber deposits and ignition timing. Hopefully, a good cleaning and some fuel additive will do the trick for me too! This forum really is useful. I will post the results once I have them.
