Viano AC problems

My Mercedes Viano, build year 2003 diesel, is showing symptoms that suggest the refrigerant compressor has failed. The diagnostics show an error, the AC won't engage, so there's no cooling, and the speedometer has a warning light. The most likely cause seems to be a faulty AC control unit. Has anyone else had this kind of automotive cooling problem? I'm looking at a repair of about 980€.

That sounds familiar. I had similar car air conditioning issues with my Vito. The cooling system just stopped working, and it was something to do with the AC unit. I can't remember exactly what it was, but the symptoms seem very similar.

Can you remember any specifics about the repair, like which part failed or what they did? Any detail about the AC unit would help. I’m trying to understand how complex the repair is before I spend 980€.

I can't recall the exact component. But the mechanic mentioned the control unit and some sensors. Because our automotive cooling symptoms are so similar, it's probably best to get a proper diagnosis at a workshop. They'll find the exact cause, so you'll know for sure what's faulty. That's better than just replacing parts randomly.

Thanks; that backs up my suspicion about the control unit. I appreciate you sharing your experience with similar AC unit issues, even if you don't remember the exact part. I'll go ahead with the repair based on the diagnosis and your feedback. It looks like I will pay the 980€ at the shop.
