Viano electric steering column adjustment problem

My Mercedes Viano with a diesel engine, build year 2001, has an electric steering column adjustment issue. The error memory says the electric adjustment is defective, and the steering column is no longer adjustable. I suspect a faulty cable or plug connection. Has anyone experienced this?

I had a similar steering issue with my Vito. Check the connector under the seat; they are prone to corrosion. Is the steering failure permanent or intermittent? If it's intermittent, it might point to a mechanical fault in the adjustment motor itself.

Thanks for the hint. Which connector exactly are you referring to? And what do you mean by mechanical fault? How would I diagnose that?

I mean the main connector block for the electric steering. As for the mechanical fault, the motor might be getting stuck or have worn gears. Honestly, given the electric steering issue, you are better off having a workshop take a look at it. It could be more than just a simple fix.

I appreciate the advice. I took it to a workshop, and you were right; it was a corroded connector. They cleaned it and re-seated it. The electric adjustment is now working. Total cost 95€. Thanks again.
