Viano Oil Pressure and Temperature Sensor Issues

My 2021 Mercedes Viano with a gasoline engine has an oil pressure light popping up, even though the oil gauge seems fine. The engine temperature warning light is also on, and a scan shows a faulty engine oil temperature sensor. Could this temp sensor be causing these issues?

The symptoms indicate a potential issue with the engine oil temperature sensor circuit. The error memory suggests a malfunction within the sensor itself or the wiring. The oil pressure warning light could be because the engine control unit (ECU) is receiving an implausible signal from the oil temperature sensor. The ECU might interpret a very high temperature as low oil pressure, triggering the warning. Verify the cable and plug connection to the component. A defective connection can introduce resistance or signal interference, leading to inaccurate sensor readings.

What exactly does 'implausible signal' mean? Is it like the sensor is giving the computer bogus numbers? And how would I check those cable connections? I'm not a mechanic.

An 'implausible signal' signifies that the value reported by the sensor falls outside the expected range deemed reasonable by the ECU based on other operating parameters. If the engine has just started, the oil temperature should be relatively low. If the sensor reports a very high temperature immediately, the ECU will recognize this as an illogical reading. To check the cable connections: visually inspect the connector for any signs of corrosion, damage, or loose wiring. You can also use a multimeter to test the continuity of the wires running to the sensor, ensuring there are no breaks or shorts. Given your limited mechanical expertise, it is advisable to seek professional assistance to diagnose and rectify this issue. Continuing to operate the vehicle with a faulty oil temperature sensor could potentially lead to engine damage if the ECU is making decisions based on incorrect temperature readings.

That really cleared things up! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on. It was a faulty connection at the temp sensor. They cleaned it up and replaced a small section of the cable, cost me about 95€. Oil pressure light is gone now!
