My 2008 Mercedes Viano with a gasoline engine has power steering issues Steering wheel vibrates and handling feels spongy Error memory flagged something Its harder to steer like the power steering is failing Could it be a dodgy cable or plug connection

I encountered a comparable predicament with my Mercedes Viano The symptoms you describe indicate a potential malfunction within the steering system Specifically the vibration and spongy handling suggest a possible compromise in the hydraulic assistance provided by the power steering mechanism Conduct a thorough inspection of all electrical connections associated with the power steering pump and associated sensors Examine the steering column and its related components ensuring there is no undue play or binding Has the wheel alignment been checked recently

Given your level of familiarity with the system I must strongly advise against attempting intricate repairs yourself The power steering system is a safety-critical component and any improper intervention could compromise its functionality leading to hazardous driving conditions The location of the cable connections can vary depending on the specific configuration of your vehicle therefore I suggest consulting a qualified technician who possesses the requisite expertise and diagnostic equipment to accurately identify and rectify the fault It is probable that the diagnostic check will reveal the precise location of the defective connection The cost of repair in my experience was approximately 95€ To reiterate prioritise safety and seek professional assistance
