Viano transmission issues

My 2017 Mercedes Viano with a gasoline engine is acting up The engine light is on, and the error code indicates a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor at 239508 km The gearbox is behaving strangely sometimes in emergency mode, sometimes slipping gears, and making a grinding noise when shifting Could low transmission oil be the reason I want to avoid a huge transmission repair bill

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Mercedes Viano was experiencing transmission issues, including an engine light, error code for a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor, emergency mode activation, gear slipping, and grinding noises. The core problem was identified as low transmission oil, which led to overheating and sensor damage. The solution involved topping off the transmission oil and replacing the faulty sensor, resolving the issues and restoring smooth operation.

Sounds rough I had similar overheating problems with my old Opel Astra, though it wasn't the same sensor My issue was the gearbox sensor acting up, putting the car in limp mode Have you checked your transmission oil level That’s usually the first thing to look at Think of it like a car's blood pressure too low, and things start going haywire If that's not it, the transmission sensor itself might be the problem Is the error code specific about the sensor

The code is pretty specific, pointing directly to the transmission oil temperature sensor You mentioned checking the transmission oil level Is that something I can easily do myself, or do I need to go to a shop I'm not exactly a mechanic, more of a 'YouTube tutorial' kind of guy

If it's pointing directly at the sensor and you're hearing grinding, it's probably past the simple stuff Checking the transmission oil on those can be a pain, sometimes you need special tools and knowledge to get it right and other times you can't even get to it Since you're getting slipping and noises too, it could be more than just low oil It sounds like you're heading into transmission repair territory The best thing to do is get it to a shop and have them take a look before things get worse It's like ignoring a small cough until you need a lung transplant

Thanks for the advice I took it to the shop The transmission oil level was indeed low, causing the overheating problems that damaged the transmission sensor They topped it off and replaced the transmission sensor It cost me 365€, but at least it's running smoothly again I appreciate the help
