Volt oil pressure light on
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Chevy Volt owner noticed the oil pressure warning light was on, despite the oil level appearing normal, though the oil looked sludgy. This issue could be due to oil contamination from neglecting the recommended maintenance schedule, particularly oil changes. The suggested solution was to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified technician, which confirmed overdue oil changes as the cause, leading to oil degradation and contamination. The problem was resolved with an oil change, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the maintenance schedule to prevent similar issues.

Maintenance schedule... hmm. Honestly, I've been a bit lax with it. I'm usually pretty good, but this year has been crazy. How often are we actually supposed to change the oil on these Volts? Could skipping an oil change really cause this much trouble?

Indeed, exceeding the maintenance interval can lead to oil degradation and subsequent contamination. The degradation reduces the oil's lubricating properties, potentially leading to premature wear and triggering the warning lights you observed. I recommend having the vehicle inspected by a qualified technician at your earliest convenience.

Thanks for the advice! Took it to a local mechanic, and you were spot on. Turns out I was way overdue for an oil change, and the oil was seriously contaminated. Cost me 165€ for the service, but at least it wasn't anything major! Lesson learned: stick to the maintenance schedule!

Greetings. I had a similar incident occur with my 2018 Volvo XC60. The engine oil exhibited signs of contamination, triggering the low oil pressure sensor. Have you adhered to the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, specifically regarding oil changes? Exceeding the maintenance interval is a common cause of oil contamination.
