Volvo V50 EGR Valve Issues

Hi, I'm having trouble with my 2009 Volvo V50 diesel. At only 45734 km, the check engine light is on, engine power is down, black smoke comes out when I accelerate, the engine idles rough, fuel consumption is up, acceleration is jerky, and I hear a loud hissing sound from the engine bay when accelerating. I think it's a jammed EGR valve. Has anyone else had these problems? I'm worried about catalytic converter damage with all the black smoke. Any thoughts?

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my Renault Megane, although it was a petrol engine. Reduced power and the check engine light were the first signs. Is the car jerking badly?

Yes, the jerking is pretty bad, especially at lower speeds. It feels like the engine is briefly starved of fuel. The jerking and hissing together are unnerving. Did your Megane do the same, and what was the cause?

Yep, jerking was definitely part of the fun. Hissing, I didn't have. EGR valve was the culprit for me, eventually. With all your symptoms, I'd say it's almost certainly that. Get it checked at a workshop quickly, before it causes more issues, like clogging up your DPF!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Your insights were invaluable. I had the EGR valve repaired at the workshop, and it cost me 355€.
