VW Arteon Defroster Failure Fix Needed, Both Windows

Looking for advice on my 2017 VW Arteon (gasoline, 106172km). The auto defrost system seems faulty, both front and rear window heaters stopped working properly. Got an error code stored but previous mechanic experience makes me hesitant to return. Anyone dealt with similar defroster repair issues on this model? Any recommendations for getting this fixed without being overcharged? Window demister problems are especially annoying now during cold weather.

Had a similar thermal window issue on my 2014 VW Passat TSI. The auto defrost failure started with intermittent heating coil problems, eventually leading to complete system failure. The root cause turned out to be more serious than initially assumed. The main heating issue stemmed from a faulty control module, which also affected the car defrost system for both front and rear windows. The repair required: Complete diagnostic scan, Replacement of defrost control module, Testing of all heating elements, Recalibration of the entire heating system This type of repair typically requires specialized VW diagnostic equipment. While checking the defrost system, they also found issues with the battery voltage regulator, which was causing additional strain on the electrical system. These problems often interconnect, as the auto defrost draws significant power. Recommend finding a workshop with VW certification and proper diagnostic tools. The repair isnt a quick fix, they needed my car for two full days to properly address all components. Without proper repair, it can lead to increased battery drain and potential electrical system damage. Consider getting a full electrical system diagnosis before winter sets in, as heating coil failures often indicate larger electrical issues.

Thanks for the detailed insight on the defrost system repair. Did you note the final cost for fixing the control module and voltage regulator? My window heater is showing similar symptoms, and Id like to budget accordingly. Also curious if youve had any recurring issues with the defroster repair since getting it fixed?

After getting my Passat properly checked, the main problem turned out to be a heavily discharged battery causing the defrost failure. The heating coil system and rear window defroster are working perfectly now since the repair was completed. The battery replacement and full system check cost me 290€, which was actually less than expected given the initial symptoms. The thermal window system now functions as intended, no recurring issues with either front or back defrosters over the past months. The heating issue completely resolved once they addressed the battery problem. Worth noting that the dealer ran a complete diagnostic on the defroster repair to ensure no other electrical components were affected. My advice would be to have them check your battery first, as electrical system problems often masquerade as individual component failures. The repair cost could be similar if you're dealing with the same root cause.

Finally got the defroster repair done last week. Found a certified VW specialist who actually took the time to properly diagnose the issue. Like others mentioned, the rear window heater wasnt the main problem, turned out the control module was shot and needed replacement. Total cost came to 450€ including parts and labor. More than I wanted to spend, but the thermal window system is working perfectly now. The mechanic also found and fixed a loose connection in the heating coil wiring that the previous shop missed completely. The whole repair took about 6 hours, they did a full system diagnostic and tested everything thoroughly. No more foggy windows or error codes. Definitely worth finding a proper specialist rather than trying to save money at my old mechanic. Sometimes paying a bit more upfront prevents bigger problems later. Good thing I got it fixed before the cold weather really sets in. Both front and rear defrosters are now working like new.
