VW Arteon DPF Failure Causes Power Loss and Smoke

Just had my latest service 2 weeks ago and DPF regeneration was performed then. Currently at 118756km. The low pressure readings from my scan match what you described. My local workshop also suggested checking the pressure sensor before attempting another forced regeneration. Will get this looked at soon since I noticed the diesel exhaust issues are becoming more frequent, especially during acceleration. I agree about not risking damage, scheduled an appointment to have it properly diagnosed and check if sensor replacement resolves the DPF issues.

Thanks for the update. Since you had a recent DPF regeneration, this further confirms my suspicion that the pressure sensor is likely the culprit rather than a clogged particulate filter. On my Passat, the symptoms also intensified over time, particularly the reduced power and strong diesel exhaust smell during acceleration. The low pressure readings from a faulty sensor typically trigger false DPF warnings, even right after regeneration. Important detail about my repair, the workshop found the wiring to the pressure sensor was slightly corroded, which contributed to the erratic readings. Make sure they check the connector and wiring harness, not just the sensor itself. After fixing mine, I noticed these immediate improvements: Warning lights cleared completely, Normal power restored, No more black smoke, Proper exhaust flow readings Since your mileage and symptoms match my experience so closely, having the pressure sensor checked is definitely the right first step before considering more extensive repairs to the particulate filter system.

Given that DPF regeneration was done during my recent service, I am relieved to learn this might just be a sensor issue rather than actual particulate filter problems. The black smoke and diesel exhaust symptoms I am experiencing do match exactly what you described with your Passat. My diagnostic scan showing low DPF pressure readings despite the recent regeneration also aligns with your case of a faulty pressure sensor. I will make sure the workshop checks both the sensor and its wiring when I take it in. The emission control system clearly needs attention, but hopefully replacing the pressure sensor will resolve these DPF issues like it did in your case. Really appreciate the detailed insight about your repair experience. It helps confirm I am taking the right approach by having the sensor diagnosed before considering more costly DPF repairs. Will update once the workshop completes their inspection.

I had a similar issue with my 2019 VW Passat 2.0 TDI. Having worked on diesel engines as a hobby mechanic, I recognized these symptoms immediately. The reduced power and black smoke pointed to exhaust system problems, specifically the exhaust back pressure sensor being defective. The particulate filter warning came on due to incorrect readings from this faulty sensor, making the engine computer think there were DPF issues when the filter itself was actually fine. My workshop first performed a diagnostic scan which showed similar low pressure readings. They identified the defective sensor rather than jumping straight to DPF regeneration. The repair cost was 245€ including parts and labor. After replacement, all symptoms disappeared and the emission control system worked perfectly again. To better assist with your case, could you share: Full engine code from your Arteon, Current mileage, When was the last DPF regeneration performed, Any recent engine work or maintenance This information would help determine if your issue is indeed similar to what I experienced or if other checks might be needed. Word of caution, continuing to drive with these symptoms can lead to actual DPF damage, so getting it properly diagnosed soon is important.
