VW Arteon Stalling Due to Faulty EVAP Purge Valve

Having issues with my 2020 VW Arteon Hybrid that suddenly started stalling at idle, plus the check engine light is on. Initial scan suggests problems with the purge valve, likely related to the EVAP system. The fuel tank seems to build unusual pressure. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and can share their repair solution? Particularly interested in what exactly was replaced and how the workshop diagnosed it. Would help me understand if I am on the right track with the tank ventilation issue.

I had a similar issue with my 2018 VW Passat Hybrid last winter. As someone with moderate automotive repair experience, I recognized the symptoms immediately since they matched what you are describing. The engine light came on and the stalling issues started quite suddenly. The EVAP system was indeed the culprit, specifically, the emission system had clogged hoses that were preventing proper fuel tank ventilation. The repair shop found this after performing a smoke test on the EVAP system. The total repair cost was 175€, which included cleaning of the ventilation lines and a full system check. The fix completely resolved both the stalling and the check engine light issues. Before offering more specific advice, could you share: How long has this been happening? Does the stalling occur more frequently after refueling? Have you noticed any fuel smell? Are there any other warning lights besides the engine light? These details would help determine if your situation matches what I experienced with my Passat and could point to whether the hoses are the primary issue.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My issue started about 2 weeks ago, and yes, the stalling is definitely worse right after filling up the tank. No fuel smell detected, and only the engine light is on, no other warning indicators. For reference, my car had its last service at 35000km, and everything was fine until these symptoms appeared. I appreciate the suggestion about the smoke test. The ventilation system cleaning cost sounds reasonable if it solves both the stalling and engine light issues. Will ask my workshop specifically about checking the purge valve and running a proper EVAP system diagnosis to confirm if the hoses are clogged before any repairs. Has anyone needed to replace their gas cap as part of fixing similar symptoms? Wondering if this could be a simpler fix before diving into more complex repairs.

Based on your additional details, this sounds exactly like what happened with my Passat. The timing after refueling is a classic sign of EVAP system issues. In my case, the smoke test revealed not just clogged hoses but also a failing purge valve that was sticking closed. While checking the gas cap is smart troubleshooting, in my situation the gas cap was fine. The real problem turned out to be a combination of debris in the ventilation lines and a faulty purge valve that wasnt properly managing fuel tank pressure. The complete fix for my car included: Full EVAP system diagnosis, Cleaning all ventilation lines, Replacing the purge valve, System pressure test after repair Total repair came to 320€ including parts and labor. The higher cost compared to my initial repair was due to the needed purge valve replacement, but it was worth it for a permanent fix. The engine stalling completely stopped after the repair, and the check engine light hasnt returned in over a year. Given your identical symptoms, especially the stalling after refueling, I strongly suspect youre dealing with the same emission system issue.

Thank you all for the feedback so far. The details about the EVAP system issues and smoke testing have been really helpful. I will have my mechanic check both the purge valve and tank ventilation system. The fact that my stalling also happens mostly after refueling does point strongly toward these components. Going to make sure they inspect the entire emission system thoroughly, including checking for any clogged ventilation lines. The cost estimate of 320€ for a complete fix including parts seems reasonable. Even if my gas cap turns out to be fine, at least ruling it out as part of the diagnosis makes sense before moving on to more complex EVAP system repairs. Will update once I get the official diagnosis and repair completed. Hoping it resolves both the engine light and stalling issues like it did in your case.
