VW Bora Fuel Injector Problems, Symptoms & Solutions

My VW Bora 2003 with gasoline engine started acting up recently with multiple issues pointing towards fuel delivery problems. The engine misfires during idle, sometimes even stalling completely. Power output is noticeably down and fuel consumption has increased significantly. Cold starts are particularly troublesome. I suspect faulty fuel injectors might be causing these symptoms. Has anyone encountered similar problems and had them fixed? Specifically interested in what diagnostics were done to confirm the issue and what the repair process involved. Also curious about repair costs, were all injectors replaced or just the faulty ones? Any input would be appreciated, especially from those who have dealt with injection system repairs on similar vehicles.

As someone with moderate repair experience, I faced nearly identical performance issues with my VW Golf 2005 1.6L gasoline engine last year. The symptoms matched yours exactly, engine misfires, rough idle, and poor fuel economy. After diagnostic testing, my workshop confirmed dirty fuel injectors were causing the performance problems. They performed a thorough injector cleaning service and replaced two severely clogged injectors that were beyond salvaging. The total repair cost was 515€, including parts and labor. The repair process involved: Complete fuel system diagnosis, Ultrasonic cleaning of salvageable injectors, Replacement of damaged injectors, New seals and gaskets, System pressure testing, ECU reset and adaptation After the repair, the engine performance returned to normal, with smooth idle and proper fuel consumption. To provide more specific advice for your situation, could you share: Engine size and type? Current mileage? When was the last fuel system service? Are you using quality fuel from reputable stations? Any check engine lights or stored error codes? This information would help determine if your vehicle needs similar repairs or if other fuel system components might be involved.

Last service was done 2500km ago where they performed routine maintenance. Diagnostics confirmed high emissions and irregular spray patterns from 3 injectors. The check engine light came on around that time showing P0301 and P0303 codes. The repair quote I received seems much higher at 890€ for replacing all 4 injectors plus labor. Given the mileage of 59596km, would it make sense to replace all of them preventively or just focus on the problematic ones? The misfire symptoms have gotten worse over the past weeks, especially during cold starts. The clogging appears quite severe based on the diagnostic report. The garage mentioned potential damage to the catalytic converter if left unaddressed due to unburned gasoline. Looking for advice on whether partial or complete injector replacement is the better approach long-term.

Based on your diagnostic results showing 3 faulty injectors and considering my previous repair experience with a similar system, I recommend replacing all 4 injectors as a complete set. While the 890€ quote is higher than my repair costs, it makes sense given current parts prices and the scope of work. Here is why a complete replacement is advisable in your case: With 3 out of 4 injectors already showing issues, the remaining one will likely fail soon, Misfire codes P0301 and P0303 indicate significant fuel delivery problems, Mixed old and new injectors can cause uneven fuel distribution, Complete replacement ensures balanced fuel spray patterns, The quoted price difference for doing all 4 versus 3 is typically minimal The risk of catalytic converter damage from continuous misfires is a real concern. My repair solved similar issues and prevented expensive secondary damage. The vehicle has performed flawlessly since the complete injector replacement, with normal fuel consumption and no misfires. Looking at your relatively low mileage, the injector problems might indicate: Poor fuel quality exposure, Carbon buildup issues, Normal wear accelerated by short trip driving Getting all injectors replaced now will likely prevent additional repairs and help maintain proper engine performance long-term.

Thanks for the detailed response and advice. After considering the risks of potential catalytic converter damage and the fact that 3 injectors are already problematic, I will proceed with the complete injector replacement. The price difference for doing all 4 versus just the faulty ones makes sense as a preventive measure. I have scheduled the repair for next week and will ensure they perform the full fuel system service along with the injector replacement. Going forward, I will be more mindful about fuel quality and might look into fuel system cleaning additives for maintenance. The vehicle needs to be reliable for daily use, so addressing these engine performance issues properly now seems like the smart choice rather than risking additional repair costs later. Will update on how the repair goes and if it resolves the misfire and fuel consumption problems completely.
