VW Caddy EGR valve failure symptoms plague performance

My engine is acting up with drop in power, jerking and hissing noises during acceleration, plus the check engine light is on. Fuel consumption has increased quite a bit lately. Pretty sure it might be the EGR valve causing trouble, but had some bad experiences with mechanics before. Running a 2015 VW Caddy 1.4 gas engine with 68500km. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Looking for tips on diagnosis and trustworthy repair solutions before heading to a shop. Vehicle emissions seem off too with some smoke coming out when accelerating.

Had the exact same symptoms on a 2015 VW Golf 1.4 TSI. The rough idle, power loss and increased fuel consumption were clear signs of EGR valve failure. A blocked or stuck EGR valve seriously affects vehicle emissions and engine performance. The repair required complete removal and cleaning of the EGR valve assembly. Carbon deposits had caused it to stick in a partially open position. The check engine light triggered due to incorrect exhaust gas recirculation readings. The mechanic also found carbon buildup in the intake manifold, which needed cleaning to prevent future issues. This is not a job for DIY repair, proper diagnostic equipment is needed to verify the fault codes and test the EGR operation. The repair involves accessing components deep in the engine bay and requires specific tools. If left unfixed, it can lead to catalytic converter damage and more serious engine problems. The symptoms match your case perfectly, especially the hissing noise during acceleration and visible smoke. Getting it diagnosed soon is important since continued driving with a faulty EGR can cause additional engine damage and worse fuel economy.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Same thing happened with my Caddy last winter. Those vacuum leaks from the EGR valve were causing all sorts of issues with my engine performance. Really helpful to know the details about the carbon buildup you found. Did the automotive repair shop do any other preventive work while they had it open? Also curious what the total repair cost was for you? My check engine light came back on briefly last month but went away on its own. Wondering if I should get it checked again just to be safe.

Since getting my Golf serviced, the EGR valve replacement has completely resolved those frustrating performance issues. The automotive repair shop charged 355€ for the complete EGR valve fix, which included cleaning the intake manifold and testing all connected systems. While doing the repair, they also performed a full emissions test to ensure everything was working correctly after the fix. The old EGR valve was completely jammed with carbon deposits, which explained the rough idle and poor engine response. After 6 months, no check engine light issues and the engine runs perfectly. If your light came on temporarily, I would definitely recommend getting it checked. These intermittent warnings often indicate early stages of component failure, and catching problems early can prevent more expensive repairs later. The improvement in fuel consumption and engine smoothness after fixing the exhaust gas recirculation system was significant. Modern engines are very sensitive to EGR problems, so proper maintenance is essential for optimal performance.

Thanks for the advice. I finally got my Caddy fixed last week and wanted to share how it went. The mechanic confirmed it was definitely the EGR valve causing all those issues. Total bill came to 420€ including parts and labor. They found heavy carbon deposits blocking the valve and cleaned out the whole system. While they had it open, they also checked the intake manifold and did a full emissions test to make sure everything was working right. The difference in performance is like night and day. No more hissing sounds, jerking, or power loss during acceleration. Fuel consumption is back to normal and the check engine light has stayed off. The smoke issue during acceleration is completely gone too. Really glad I got it sorted before it caused any serious engine damage. The diesel engines in these vans are pretty solid when properly maintained, but letting EGR problems go unchecked can really mess things up. Lesson learned about not waiting too long when these symptoms first appear.
