VW Crafter ABS Warning: Speed Sensor Troubles Ahead

Looking for advice on my 2021 VW Crafter Electric that started showing ABS system issues. The ABS warning light stays on and traction control seems unreliable, especially during braking. The diagnostic points to a speed sensor fault, but wondering if anyone has experienced similar symptoms and can share what the actual fix was. The transmission still shifts fine, but the problem is getting worse. Already checked the fuses and basic connections. Would really appreciate hearing about repair costs and specific fixes from those who dealt with this issue.

As someone with moderate experience working on EVs, I dealt with a very similar issue on my 2019 VW e-Golf. The symptoms were nearly identical, persistent ABS warning light and inconsistent traction control. After various attempts at basic troubleshooting, the speedometer started showing incorrect readings. The diagnostic tests initially suggested a speed sensor problem, but it turned out the ABS control unit itself was defective. The workshop confirmed this after running comprehensive diagnostics. The repair involved replacing the entire ABS control unit, which cost around 1000€ including programming and calibration. The fix completely resolved both the ABS and traction control issues. Before suggesting specific solutions for your Crafter Electric, could you share: Current mileage on the odometer, Whether the speedometer readings are accurate, If any other warning lights appeared, The exact diagnostic codes from the ABS system, When the issue first started This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with my e-Golf.

Thanks for the previous input. Mine currently shows 70307KM on the odometer and had its last service just 2 months ago. The speedometer seems spot on, but the ABS malfunction got worse over the past week. The ECM shows error code P0500, which suggests a vehicle speed sensor circuit issue. The wheel sensors appear clean, but the sensor readings are inconsistent according to the diagnostic scan. No other warning lights have appeared yet, but the braking system definitely feels less predictable than before.

Thanks for providing those details. Having experienced this on my e-Golf, the error code P0500 initially pointed us in a similar direction. However, those inconsistent sensor readings from your diagnostic scan are particularly interesting, as they mirror what happened in my case before the full ABS unit failure. While the clean wheel sensors are a good sign, the erratic readings suggest a potential wiring issue between the sensors and the ABS control module. On my vehicle, this presented as intermittent sensor data before the complete failure of the ABS unit. Given your odometer reading of 70307KM and the recent service, I recommend having the wiring harness thoroughly checked first. In my case, the workshop discovered corroded connectors at the ABS module input, which caused similar diagnostic readings before requiring the complete unit replacement. A full diagnostic with a specialized transmission and ABS testing tool might reveal whether your issue is isolated to the wiring or if the control unit is beginning to fail like mine did. The cost for a comprehensive diagnostic typically runs around 150€, but it prevents replacing parts unnecessarily. Would you mind sharing if the ABS behavior changes when driving at different speeds? This detail helped identify the root cause in my situation.

Thank you all for your suggestions. After checking today, I noticed the ABS malfunction becomes more noticeable at higher speeds, which matches what you described. The speedometer still works fine, but the erratic sensor readings shown in the diagnostic really concern me. I scheduled an appointment with my regular workshop to get that wiring harness inspection done first, rather than jumping straight to replacing the ABS control unit. The 150€ diagnostic fee seems reasonable if it helps pinpoint whether its just corroded connectors or a failing control module. Given how the symptoms match your experience with the sensor issues and progressive ABS failure, I want to address this before it gets worse. Will update once I get the results from the comprehensive diagnostic test. My main priority is getting reliable ABS function back, especially since winter is approaching and I need predictable traction control.
