Thanks for the detailed response about the microphone repair. The symptoms you described match my Crafter perfectly, especially the non-working voice commands while regular audio works fine. The wireless connection drops completely during calls now, which is really frustrating. Good to know about the overhead console replacement being the proper fix rather than just software updates. How much did the complete repair cost you? Also, has everything worked flawlessly since the fix or have you noticed any other quirks with the hands-free system?

After getting the repair done, I can report the hands-free system works perfectly now. The wireless connection stays stable during calls and the voice recognition performs just like when the vehicle was new. The total repair came to 815€, which included replacing the complete overhead console unit and recalibrating the audio system. While it wasnt cheap, the sound quality and hands-free functionality are completely restored. The mechanic mentioned these microphone failures are fairly common in VW models from that era. The installation required specialized diagnostic equipment to properly integrate the new components with the infotainment system. Since the repair six months ago, I havent experienced any drops in call quality or audio input issues. The ambient noise cancellation also works much better now. Just make sure your repair shop uses genuine OEM parts for the replacement. Some aftermarket units can cause compatibility problems with the original system components.

Finally got the repair done last week and wanted to share my experience. Found a certified VW shop that specializes in electrical systems. They confirmed the microphone repair was needed, just as suggested here. The wireless connection issues were exactly due to the faulty overhead console. Paid 890€ for the complete fix including parts and labor. The volume control and voice recognition now work perfectly, its like having a new system. The mechanic showed me the old unit and explained how the ambient noise filtering component had completely failed. They used genuine parts and took about 4 hours to complete everything, including testing. Really glad I went with a proper repair instead of trying cheaper alternatives. No more dropped calls or connection problems. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction with this issue.

The voice recognition and hands-free calling issues you describe match what I experienced with my 2015 VW ID.4. The microphone repair turned up as necessary after initial diagnostics. The main symptoms were similar, sound quality was perfect for audio playback, but the hands-free system stopped detecting voice commands and phone calls became impossible. The ambient noise cancellation system was also affected. The root cause was a defective microphone module in the overhead console. This required removing the headliner to access the complete assembly. Its a known weak point in the infotainment system that tends to fail around the 80,000km mark. A professional repair shop will need specialized diagnostic tools to properly test the microphone circuits and Bluetooth modules. This isnt a quick fix, the entire overhead console typically needs replacement since the mic is integrated into the assembly. Watch out for shops suggesting simple software updates alone will solve it. While software can cause Bluetooth issues, the symptoms you describe strongly point to hardware failure in the mic system. The repair is fairly involved but resolves the issue completely when done right. Getting the proper OEM parts is crucial for long-term reliability of the hands-free system.
