VW Crafter Brake Switch Fault Triggers Warning Lights

Looking for help with my 2015 VW Crafter diesel. The brake light keeps failing and throwing error messages on the display. Pretty sure its related to a faulty brake switch, as the error appears in the system memory. Has anyone dealt with a similar electrical issue? Particularly interested in knowing if replacing the brake switch solved it and what the repair process involved. My brake lights are working intermittently, which makes me think its not a simple bulb problem. Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and workshop solutions before I take it in for repairs.

Having some experience with diesel vans, I encountered a similar issue on my 2013 VW Transporter. The brake light warning and error messages were nearly identical to what you describe. The solution was actually quite simple and did not require any parts or workshop visits. The brake pedal switch was getting stuck due to dirt and debris accumulation. After cleaning the area around the brake pedal switch thoroughly, the vehicle safety system stopped showing errors and the brake lights worked normally again. This is a known issue with several VW commercial vehicles where the brake pedal switch mechanism can get dirty over time, causing intermittent electrical contact issues. The brake system itself was completely fine, it was purely an electrical signal problem. To help diagnose your specific case, could you share: Does the brake pedal feel different when the error occurs? Are you getting any specific error codes? Have you noticed any patterns when the brake light warnings appear? Does the problem occur more often when the engine is cold or warm? A proper inspection of the brake pedal switch area might save you an unnecessary workshop visit. However, if cleaning does not resolve the issue, the switch itself might need replacement, which is typically a straightforward repair.

After my last service at 129199KM, I cleaned around the brake pedal switch as suggested but the issue persists. The brake pedal feels normal and the error messages appear out of nowhere, regardless of engine temperature. The fault codes point directly to a faulty switch, so I will proceed with the switch replacement. Thanks for sharing your experience with a similar automotive switch problem. Good to know its a common issue with these vans and not a major vehicle safety concern. The brake system works fine otherwise, just need to sort out this electrical gremlin.

Thanks for the update on your brake light switch situation. Unlike my case where cleaning solved it, sounds like your switch has indeed reached the end of its life. These automotive switches do wear out eventually, despite being a relatively simple component. The brake pedal switch replacement is a cost-effective fix, typically running between 50€-100€ for the part. With the fault codes confirming the switch failure, its definitely the right call to replace it rather than keep troubleshooting. Since your brake system is otherwise functioning correctly, you can drive safely until the repair is done. Just be aware other drivers might not always see your brake lights activating. Keep a bit more distance to the vehicle behind you as a precaution. I had my switch replaced at around 140000KM on my Transporter, and it resolved all the error messages permanently. The repair took under an hour at the workshop. Make sure they clear the fault codes after installing the new switch.

Thanks everyone for the help and guidance. Just wanted to close the loop, got the switch replacement done yesterday and it cost 75€ for the part plus labor. The tail light and brake light warnings have completely disappeared from the dashboard. The mechanic confirmed the old switch had worn contact points causing the intermittent electrical connection. The vehicle safety system is now working perfectly with no more error codes. Total repair time was about 45 minutes including clearing the fault memory. For anyone searching with similar issues, if cleaning around the brake switch area doesnt resolve intermittent brake light problems, a switch replacement is likely needed. The repair is straightforward and relatively inexpensive compared to other electrical fixes on these vans. Going to mark this as solved since all the error messages are gone and the brake lights are working consistently again. Really glad it wasnt anything more serious with the actual brake system.
