VW Crafter Fuel Door Failure Disrupts Multiple Systems

Got problems with the fuel flap on my 2010 VW Crafter diesel (179000km). The release button stopped working completely and the fuel door wont open or close properly anymore. Already got an error code stored but my last mechanic experience wasnt great. The cars other functions are acting up too. Anyone dealt with similar issues? Could this be the electric actuator failing? Looking for advice before choosing a repair shop.

Had the exact same issue on my 2013 VW Transporter 2.0 TDI. The fuel filler door problem started with occasional release button failures, then progressed to a complete lockout. The electric actuator was indeed the culprit, combined with a faulty lock actuator mechanism. The repair involved replacing both the electrical components and mechanical linkage. This turned out to be a serious issue because the electrical fault had started affecting other systems, including central locking and dashboard warnings. The lock actuator replacement was necessary since the original unit had corroded internally. Worth noting that when these components fail, they often cause cascading electrical issues throughout the vehicle. The repair requires specialized diagnostic equipment to properly reset the system after component replacement. This isnt a DIY job since accessing the mechanism requires partial removal of interior panels and proper electrical system testing. From your description, the symptoms match exactly what I experienced, complete failure of the release button and related electrical gremlins. Having it properly diagnosed and fixed by a qualified shop is crucial to prevent further electrical system complications.

Thanks for sharing your fuel door experience. My actuator also needed replacing and the whole repair fixed those unusual electrical quirks too. Just wondering what the total cost was for your repair? My key fob and cable release were acting up before the fix, but everything has been smooth since then. Have you had any related issues pop up in the months after the repair?

Really glad to help. Since having the repair done, the fuel flap release mechanism has worked perfectly with no recurring problems. The electrical fault was completely resolved, fixing both the release button and those annoying system quirks. My total repair bill came to 210€ for the new linkage and labor, worth every cent considering all the related issues it solved. The cable release and central locking have been working flawlessly for over 8 months now. No more struggles with the fuel flap or unusual electrical glitches. If your symptoms were similar to mine, sounds like you made the right call getting it properly fixed rather than attempting temporary solutions.

Following up on the whole repair saga. Finally took it to a certified shop last week, what a relief! The mechanic found exactly what you described, faulty actuator causing those electrical gremlins. Bill came to 280€ total, bit more than yours but included some extra diagnostics. The fuel flap works perfectly now, plus those unusual electrical issues cleared up completely. The release mechanism is smooth again and that annoying error code is gone. Best part is my central locking and dash warnings are back to normal. Really appreciate the heads up about getting it properly diagnosed, saved me from trying cheaper quick fixes that probably wouldnt have solved the root problem. Nice to have everything working as it should again.
