Thanks for sharing your experience. I had nearly identical issues with my Crafter last year, heavy steering and warning lights. The mechanic found problems with the steering rack and a damaged pressure hose that was causing fluid leaks. They did a wheel alignment check too since the steering felt off. Did you keep track of what you paid for the repairs? Just curious since prices seem to vary quite a bit for steering system work. Also wondering if youve had any related problems pop up since getting it fixed?

Just got the Transporter back from the mechanic last week. The power steering issue was fully resolved, it turned out to be much simpler than expected. They found a damaged cable connection that was causing the system to malfunction. Total cost was 95€ for the repair, which was mainly labor to access and fix the connection. The steering works perfectly now, no more heavy wheel or warning lights. This was much cheaper than when they initially suspected problems with the steering rack or steering pump. Worth mentioning that regular power steering maintenance can prevent bigger issues down the line. Since the repair, the handling has been spot-on and the steering is back to its original smooth operation. No warning lights have returned. Quite relieved it was just a wiring issue rather than needing major component replacements.

The steering issue on my Crafter turned out pretty well in the end. Took it to a different mechanic who specializes in power steering systems. They found hydraulic fluid leaking from a cracked pressure line and some wear in the steering rack itself. The full repair included replacing the pressure line, refilling the hydraulic fluid, and adjusting the steering rack alignment. Total bill came to 420€ including parts and labor. Took them about 3 hours to complete everything. Been driving it for a few weeks now and the steering feels much better, no more shaking or heavy spots when turning. The warning light is gone too. Really glad I got a second opinion instead of going back to my regular guy who always seems to overcharge. The mechanic also showed me what to watch for in the future, things like checking power steering fluid levels and listening for unusual noises when turning. Good to know for preventive maintenance.

Had similar symptoms on a 2011 VW Transporter TDI. The steering wheel became increasingly heavy and vibrated noticeably during low-speed turns. The power steering warning light appeared intermittently at first, then stayed on permanently. The issue turned out to be a faulty connection in the steering column wiring harness. The electric power steering system was losing signal intermittently due to corroded terminals. While checking the system, the mechanic also found the steering pump mounting bracket had worked loose, which contributed to the vibration. This was a serious electrical fault that required removing parts of the dashboard to access the steering column connections. The repair involved replacing the wiring harness section and properly securing the steering pump mount. Total repair time was about 4 hours. Worth noting that leaving power steering issues unaddressed can lead to complete system failure and unsafe driving conditions. If your Crafter shows these symptoms, best to have it diagnosed promptly as the electric steering system is critical for proper vehicle control.
